Ali Campbell is a British singer, solo artist and songwriter. Ali Campbell (birth-name: Alistair Ian Campbell) was born on 15 February 1959 in Birmingham, UK. Ali Campbell was the lead singer and founding member of the reggae band UB40. Ali Campbell is the son of Scottish folk singer, Ian Campbell, and the brother of former band-mate Robin Campbell. Ali Campbell also has a younger brother, Duncan Campbell who has now joined UB40.

Ali Campbell performed guitar and lead vocals from UB40's 1978 inception through early 2008. UB40 is a British reggae band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, UK. On 24 January 2008 it was announced that Ali Campbell would be leaving the group after 30 years. Ali Campbell, who sang on hits such as "Red, Red Wine", intended to concentrate on his solo work, UB40 said in a statement. It was originally stated that this was in order for Ali Campbell to concentrate on solo projects. The remaining seven members of UB40 released a statement saying: "Ali made a very simple decision, he chose to pursue and put his solo career over and above continuing to work with UB40 after February 2008, it's as simple as that". The Birmingham reggae band, UB40's last gigs together were in February 2008 in Australia, New Zealand and Uganda.

On 25 January 2008, Campbell said that he was leaving after almost 30 years because management difficulties had become "intolerable". Ali Campbell claimed the disagreements had been going on for nearly five years and he was "deeply unhappy" with many decisions and some band members such as Brian Travers. In a statement, Ali Campbell said: "I have been deeply unhappy with administrative practices and with many decisions that have been made in recent years.

Ali Campbell's solo album, Running Free entered the UK Albums Chart at number 9. Running Free was the first Top 10 studio album for Ali Campbell, since Labour of Love III was released ten years earlier. Michael Virtue, keyboard player for UB40, also resigned from UB40, shortly after Ali Campbell. Michael Virtue stated that he too, was joining Ali Campbell in his legal investigation against UB40. UB40 now had six of the original eight members remaining and invited Ali Campbell's brother, Duncan Campbell, to join the band as lead vocalist. Michael Virtue joined Ali Campbell's new outfit, The Dep Band.

Ali Campbell went on to perform a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall on 3 April 2008, featuring many of the artists who had appeared on his Running Free album. For the remainder of 2008, Ali Campbell toured internationally with the Dep Band promoting the album. Ali Campbell released his third solo album, Flying High, in 2009. Flying High entered the UK Albums Chart at number 13. Ali Campbell had released his first solo album, Big Love in 1995, which ranked number 6 at UK Albums Chart.

Ali and his band, The Dep Band continued to tour in countries from Russia to Africa, with tours of Australia and New Zealand and a UK tour lined up in 2009.

Lead singer with UB40, which has sold over 70 million records worldwide, Ali Campbell has toured across the globe and notched up four number No. 1 worldwide singles with the group, including over 40 Top 40 UK singles, released 18 studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. At the 2007 Grammy Awards, UB40 were nominated for best reggae album, for their most recent album released in 2006.
