The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. Davis Cup, the largest annual international team competition in sports, is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Davis Cup is contested between teams of players from competing countries in a knock-out format. The world's 16 best national teams are assigned to the World Group and compete annually for the Davis Cup. Remaining Nations compete in one of three regional zones (Americas, Asia/Oceania, and Europe/Africa).

Great Britain faces a play-off against Poland, from 18-20 September 2009. Defeat at the play-off will see Great Britan relegated to Group Two of the Euro/Africa Zone.
